DSC to review benefits as re-balancing continues

A major review of a range of benefits looks set to take place after Minister Chris Robertshaw said more savings had to be made in Social Care.

He said benefits were costing an extra £10million a year at the same time departments are being asked to cut their budgets.

Mr Robertshaw said the main rises in cost were coming increases in people taking up unemployment benefit, services to a growing elderly population and the public housing sector.

He added that the DSC is now charged with the task of reducing social spending while at the same time maintaining services.

A formal process is now set to begin this summer and the minister says he’s aiming to head a full debate in Tynwald’s December sitting.
