Drink driver told police he was searching for ducks

Douglas Courthouse

A Douglas man who was arrested for drink driving told police he'd been in his car searching for ducks.

49-year-old Martin Mcarthur claimed he'd been driving on the farmland where he lived to ensure they hadn't been stolen when police arrived at his property on October 11th.

They were responding to a tip-off from someone who'd seen him drinking in a pub in Union Mills before driving off - he was described as being "completely on the wrong side of the road".

When police arrived at the farm in Douglas just after 9.20pm Mcarthur was found in an "extremely intoxicated" state in a static caravan - officers found his car still warm and breathalysed him.

He failed with figures showing he was around three times the drink drive limit - however he denied driving home saying he'd walked; he was later picked out in an identity parade by the witness.

At Douglas Courthouse this week Mcarthur pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving whilst disqualified - social enquiry reports have been requested before sentencing on December 1st.
