War hero Hector recognised in Queen's Honours

A 93-year-old war hero from Sulby has been awarded an historic honour by the Queen for services to education.

Hector Duff, who now lives in Onchan, is a decorated Second World War solider who served throughout Europe and north Africa.

For a number of years Hector has toured the Island’s primary and secondary schools recounting his experiences to students.

Despite being well into his 90s, he’s more eager than ever to keep delivering talks and is already planning a series of school visits in 2013.

Now, after decades of educating Manx students, Hector has been awarded the prestigious British Empire Medal.

Speaking to 3FM, the local hero was quick to highlight the hard work of his friends and colleagues (play audio):

Olympic gold medallist Peter Kennaugh has been given an OBE as has retiring Chief Constable Mike Langdon, while motorcycle racing welfare officer Wyn Evans becomes an MBE.
