Student 'hit in the pocket' after driving error

Douglas Courthouse

A university student has been fined over £1,300 after making a "catalogue of errors" whilst driving.

21-year-old David Kelly was reported to police after overtaking on Richmond Hill in Douglas on April 3rd.

He started the manoeuvre late, ignoring the filter arrows, and crossed the solid white lines - the driver he was trying to pass had to take action to avoid a crash leaving her "shaken up".

The Castletown man was interviewed by police - he told them he couldn't remember what he had been doing on that day.

At Douglas Courthouse this week he was re-arraigned and admitted driving without due care and attention, having no insurance and failing to provide details.

His advocate said the overtake "wasn't on" but said Kelly hadn't felt it was as "dicey" as the aggrieved party and claimed he hadn't been forthcoming with officers because he panicked.

Sentencing him Magistrates told him his driving had fallen below an acceptable standard saying the punishment would "hit him hard in the pocket" - as well as the fine they imposed 11 penalty points.
