The Point One campaign’s Sam Bacon has admitted the group understands the negative public reaction to overseas aid in the current climate.
The government has confirmed that £600,000 will go to overseas charities during the next 12 months.
This month £50,000 went to Sudan and Sierra Leone, which sparked fierce reaction by some members of the public in wake of widespread cutbacks across government spending.
Mr Bacon said he sympathises with their concerns, but added the donations could have a wider impact than merely charitable contributions:
