Freedom of Information act update in Tynwald next week

The Chief Minister will give an eagerly awaited update on the possible introduction of the Freedom of Information act in Tuesday's sitting of Tynwald.

Under the act the public would have the rights to access both local authority and government files.

A more transparent government is something that has long been campaigned for by the positive action group, with Chief Minister Allan Bell pledging his commitment to that idea.

The UK introduced the act 7 years ago.

It's estimated it would carry an initial start up cost for government of roughly £5.6 million, with costs of £1.3 million to then be incurred each year.
