Fire crews tackle Onchan house fire

Elderly resident treated for smoke inhalation

Fire crews responded to a call in Onchan yesterday were they were confronted with a well established fire in a first floor bedroom.

One elderly resident had to be rescued from the ground floor and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Four fire fighters using hose reels brought the fire under control, containing it to the bedroom. However there was smoke damage to the rest of the property.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been an electric blanket which had been left plugged in and turned on.

Once extinguished the crews remained on site for a further two hours dampening down and cutting away to ensure the fire had been completely extinguished.

The message from the fire safety team is electric blankets should be tested every two years, and disposed of after 10.
