Emergency closure order for Langness right of way

This is the footbridge which has been deemed unsafe

An emergency closure order has been enforced on one of the footpaths at Langness – just two days after a number of routes in the area were deemed as public rights of way.

The footpath which leads from the back of the lighthouse at Jeremy Clarkson’s home to the fog horn, has been closed by the Department of Infrastructure due to safety concerns.

Network operations engineer for the department, Bill Corlett, told 3FM that the issue had been on the department’s radar for some time but it couldn’t act until the land was deemed as a public right of way.

That decision was made in the High Court on Thursday by Deemster David Doyle where the issue over the unsafe bridge was also raised by Mr Clarkson’s lawyer who said if the route was re-opened, more people would be attracted to the area therefore posing more of a safety risk.

Mr Corlett said the bridge is unsafe because it doesn’t have any handrails and work to rectify this would take place over the next few weeks.
