Election legislation changes to go before House of Keys

Legislation which should promote transparency and integrity during elections will go before the House of Keys tomorrow.

Government wants to update the current law which governs elections - it follows public consultation on the matter last year.

The amended Representation of the People Bill includes proposals from an independent review following the Douglas East by-election scandal in 2010.

New proposals include requiring candidates and political parties to declare donations, placing a limit on campaign expenses and imposing further restrictions on proxy voting.

A registration system for political parties could also be introduced.
