Department of Education and Children Revise Undertake Review into Special Needs Transportation Service

Changes Will be Made as a Result of Review

A new policy is being published by the Department of Education and Children geared toward establishing the eligibility of those who require special needs transportation to and from schools.

As it stands there are 83 students on the Island who receive the free service, 57 of the under 19s also require escorts.

The criteria rules that children schooled within their catchment area are not eligible for transport, but the Department have said if it’s determined a student needs the transportation then arrangements will be made.

Minister Teare has said as a result of the review some parents will no longer find transport provided as their situation may have changed, he also said however that as a result of the review it could identify new pupils that require the free service.

The Minister defended it saying it’s not just a money saving move but ultimately a chance for parents to become aware of their entitlements and responsibilities.
