Bell applauds Manx cycling heroics

The Chief Minister has sent his congratulations to cyclists Peter Kennaugh and Ben Swift following their success at the Track Cycling World Championships.

Twenty-two-year-old Manxman Kennaugh won gold in the men’s team pursuit for Team GB alongside his three team-mates in Melbourne earlier today.

The result was a new word record, which beat the previous best set by Britain at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Meanwhile, Onchan resident Swift produced a powerful finish to win the 15km scratch race.

Allan Bell said this further demonstrates the ‘amazing depth of sporting talent we have in the Isle of Man, particularly in cycling’.

He added that this latest success ‘provides further evidence that people from a small country such as the Isle of Man can succeed on the international stage if they have the ability, commitment and support’.
