Basking Shark research presented at Berlin conference

The ground breaking research currently being conducted on basking sharks was recently presented to a conference in Berlin.

The report focused on the fin identification work carried out in Manx waters each year, and how it enables the Wildlife Trust to track the habits and learn more about the elusive gentle giants.

So far over 80 sharks have been identified through the slime sample research, most importantly it enables the teams to learn more about how they interact and what their conservation needs could be.

They also talked about the tags they have put onto 18 of the sharks, this enables them to find out more about where they go in the colder months.

All MBSW research is licensed by DEFA and reviewed annually to ensure that the research does not compromise the protection of basking sharks or the welfare of individual animals.
