Turnip shortage creates Hop tu Naa headache

Bad weather means there is a shortage of turnips

The annual Hop tu Naa celebrations on the Island have been thrown into turmoil due to a turnip shortage.

It’s down to the heavy rain this summer which washed away the majority of the vegetable seed.

Each year around 3,000 turnips are harvested but this year just 200 have materialised – leading to a drought at Cregneash for this weekend’s traditional event.

Anyone attending has been asked to bring their own vegetables to carve into lanterns.

Manx National Heritage public services manager Howard Parkin says there will also be a knock on effect from the shortage:
