Tragedy hit the Giro D’Italia yesterday after Belgian rider Wouter Weylandt died following a high-speed crash.
Pink Jersey holder Mark Cavendish took to his twitter following the race to express his sympathies for Wouter’s family, saying the whole thing has left him feeling sick to his stomach.
The Belgian rider’s team have decided they will stay in the race.
In tribute to Weylandt today’s 216 km stage from Quarto dei Mille to Livorno has been neutralised, this means the outcome of the race will not count towards the overall placings.
It will be different to a usual race however, the peleton will tackle the stage at a slow pace and the deceased rider's team mates will come to the front of the bunch for the final kilometre.
