Thousands of gallons of water used on Foxdale fire

The Fire Service is reviewing CCTV recordings to establish the cause of a serious fire which took place last week near Foxdale.

Firefighters were called to reports of a bin fire in the area of Stoney Mountain Road at around 9.40pm on Friday.

On arrival they found a large fire in a pile of rubbish that was due to be processed, measuring 15 metres by 20 metres, which had been burning for some time before the alarm was raised.

Due to the close proximity of high voltage overhead power lines firefighters were unable to proceed with extinguishing the fire until the MEA gave clearance.

Once this was approved they used several thousand gallons of water to attempt to put it out as well as a 25 tonne excavator which covered the burning material with a mixture of earth and rubble.

After three and a half hours on scene the fire was brought under control and left to burn out by itself.
