Traffic Issues Put Breaks on Tesco Expansion Plans Indefinately
Plans for an extension at the Tesco Store in Lake Road, Douglas have been scrapped.
The Council of Ministers commissioned a report into the viability and practicality of a Tesco mega store, it was carried out by Inspector David Bushby.
He concluded that Tesco had failed to demonstrate that the traffic generated by the development could be satisfactorily and safely accommodated on the surrounding roads.
The Council did not agree upon two other reasons for refusal put forward by the Inspector, concerning the location and scale of the extension.
Smaller retailers around the Douglas area will be breathing a sigh of relief after the Tesco stores everything under one roof at a highly competitive price policy looked set to put a serious dent in their business.
