Prisoners' education classes take a dip

Prisoners are receiving fewer education classes than they did five years ago.

That's according to statistics released by the Department of Home Affairs - which shows 39 classes run at the Isle of Man Prison each week.

That's a drop from 54 in 2010 - however, the department says it recognises the importance of education as it prepares inmates for re-integration after they have completed their sentence.

It's also been revealed that joinery, painting, decorating and plumbing workshops will not be reinstated.

They were cancelled in 2010 as it wasn't possible to find suitably qualified instructors. As a result, the department says the teaching and resources budget has now been cut.
