Petition to de-list Ramsey warehouse passed to gov’t

By Ewan Gawne - Local Democracy Reporter

A petition to reverse the decision to register a derelict building in Ramsey has been handed to the Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister.

Six hundred people have signed the document, calling for the old farmer’s combine warehouse, on West Quay, to be removed from the protected buildings list.

The petition was presented by Julie Billingsley to Geoffrey Boot and the director of planning, Jennifer Chance.

The warehouse was added to the Island’s protected buildings register in February, though many have opposed the listing, calling it a barrier to redevelopment of the area.

The decision can still be appealed though, and Mrs Chance says the petition will be ‘accepted as public comment’ and taken into consideration.

Registered buildings can be altered, but owners must go through a different process to make any changes.

Petitioner Mrs Billingsley supports the redevelopment of brownfield sites, but says this building is an eyesore, that’s ‘putting the breaks’ on regeneration of the quay.
