OFT warn people not to fall for 'cute scams'

The Office of Fair Trading has warned people not to fall for 'cute scams' after a woman was conned out of £4,000 trying to buy a puppy.

The woman from the UK found the animal on a website and contacted the seller who gave an address in the Isle of Man.

However after paying for the animal, and then added transportation costs, the woman was told the seller wanted more money because of the puppy’s supposed health problems.

Sadly the puppy never materialised and it later transpired that the contact details provided by the seller were from the Cameroon.

The OFT has said people should check what they are buying carefully and should not pay any money upfront without first seeing the animal.

Advice centre manager Andrea Tabb said scammers prey on people’s good nature.
