New LUCAS devices will help save lives

New machines which will provide electronic chest compressions to people in cardiac arrest have been welcomed by healthcare staff.

The Department of Health will roll out 13 LUCAS devices which will be used during the CPR process when someone’s heart has stopped beating. 

Over 100 staff will be trained to use the machines which will be used on scene, in ambulances and at the hospital. 

Paul Ellis, the lead resuscitation officer at Noble’s Hospital, said the benefits of the machines had been demonstrated recently when one was used for footballer Fabrice Muamba when he suffered a cardiac arrest.
