Mother spared jail after offending out of 'blind love'

62-year-old Jean Bonnar sent a package containing £2800 to an address in Scotland in October 2014 suspecting it was criminal property. 

 

Two months later the Ramsey woman's son was jailed for his part in a heroin ring which saw him, and another man, trying to import £22,000 of the Class A drug into the Island. 

 

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse last week the court was told police had trawled the phone records between mother and son finding conversations about money and postal arrangements. 

 

When she was arrested she told police she knew her son was a heroin user and was unemployed but said it "hadn't clicked" that the money could be drug related. 

 

Bonnar's advocate told the court her family's life had been blighted by heroin for two decades adding "love is blind and indeed it is on this occasion". 

 

Sentencing her Deemster Montgomerie suspended the five month sentence for two years, and fined her £2,000, saying "I just hope in the future you're not so blind to his behaviour".
