Health and Social Care Minister Kate Beecroft says it would be a waste of taxpayers' money to continue subsidising the Meals on Wheels service.
Rushen MHK Juan Watterson quizzed Mrs Beecroft about the decision to end the contract with Age Concern which currently provides the facility.
In response, she said it would be reckless to continue funding a service when there are other, if not better alternative services available.
The minister also said when the subsidy was initially provided there weren't any other providers - however this is now not the case.
