Man jailed for trying to smuggle drugs into prison

People need to understand that sentences passed down for drugs offences on the Island are "severe".

That's the message from the Deemster who's sent a Douglas man to jail for trying to smuggle drugs into the Isle of Man Prison.

27-year-old Anthony Lyons pleaded guilty to unlawfully supplying Class A and B drugs to a serving inmate during a visit on March 22nd.

He was spotted passing the package to him during a handshake - it contained heroin worth £104 and cannabis resin worth £12.

He also admitted two counts of theft from July 11th - Lyons told police his head was "messed up" due to drink and drugs when he stole from Boots and Game on Strand Street in Douglas.

His advocate told the court Lyons was not a stupid man but had made "stupid decisions" adding that it was "quite sad" that a man of his age felt that going to prison would benefit him.

Sentencing him to four years and four months Deemster Montgomerie told him the length of sentence was affected by the fact he hadn't named his supplier.
