Airport staff aren't required to check if the way someone looks matches the gender on their travel documentation.
That's according to a response to a Freedom of Information request from a man who said he'd accidentally been travelling on a woman's passport for years - without it being noted.
In reply, the Department for Enterprise says checks only need to compare the passenger's name and likeness to ensure the person boarding is the one who checked baggage in.
It adds UK Civil Aviation Authority Guidance means it's unlikely any airport staff would comment on the gender listed in a passport.
