Listing of Ramsey warehouse ‘a hurdle’ in the way of development

By Ewan Gawne - Local Democracy Reporter

A Ramsey commissioner is disappointed to see ‘another hurdle placed in the way of the redevelopment’ of the town’s West Quay.

It was announced last week (14 Feb) that a derelict warehouse building, built on the waterfront in the mid-nineteenth century, has been added to the Island’s protected buildings register.

The owners of the site will now have to comply with an extra layer of rules and regulations before any work on the building takes place.

They had applied to demolish buildings on the larger site on which the warehouse sits last summer, and were supported by Ramsey Commissioners.

However the local authority also backed a case in November made by planners for the building to be registered due to its architectural significance, only to change its stance in January.

Commissioner Juan McGuinness was opposed to the listing from the outset.
