'Legal High' MDAI banned for a further 12 months

In this month sitting of Tynwald it was decided that a further ban of 12 months will be placed on the so called ‘legal high’ MDAI.

The substance was originally developed as an antidepressant, but was swiftly circulated as an alternative to mephedrone, or plant food as it’s known.

MDAI will remain as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1976, with the ban’s extension set to continue from January 1st.

The substance was attributed to the tragic death of a local teenager in 2011.

Minister for Health David Anderson has said he’s of the opinion a continued ban is in the best interest of the community, and that not renewing it would send mixed messages.
