Historic Dunkirk anchor returns to Island

The anchor from Mona\'s Queen arrives back on Manx shores this morning

A Manx anchor which has been buried at sea since the Dunkirk evacuations has returned back home today.

The restored anchor from Mona’s Queen arrived back in the Island this morning, 18 months after being raised from the seabed.

In 1940, eight Steam Packet ships took part in the British Expeditionary Force and brought 24,669 of them to safety.

One in 14 vessels used in the Dunkirk evacuations was a Steam Packet ship, however three – the Mona’s Queen, King Orry and Fenella – were sunk by enemy fire.

The anchor will be sited at Kallow Point in Port St Mary as a permanent memorial to all Manx crew who took part in the Second World War.
