Full findings of vessel collision off Manx coast

A Gibraltar-registered container ship \'failed to stop\' after a collision with a fishing boat in the Irish Sea, according to an official report.

A Gibraltar-registered container ship 'failed to stop' after a collision with a fishing boat in the Irish Sea, according to an official report.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch said the MV Philipp collided with a UK scallop dredger six miles off the Manx coast April this year1.

There were no injuries or pollution but the fishing boat, the FV Lynn Marie, was badly damaged and was towed in to Port St Mary harbour.

After the collision the container vessel did not stop and no attempts were made to communicate with the fishing vessel to see if it required assistance.

The report recommended raising crew competency onboard the MV Philipp. It also advised the container ship managers to ensure navigation and anti-collision aids were used properly.

The report concluded that the watch keeper onboard the FV Lynn Marie did not notice the container ship's direction change towards his vessel until it was too late.

The MAIB said there had been 152 collisions between UK registered vessels and merchant vessels in UK waters between 1991 and 2010 resulting in the deaths of 23 fisherman.
