Embankment Collapses In Port St Mary

Locals Evacuated And Don\'t Know When They Can Return Home

A group of port St Mary residents spend the night in refuge after a land slippage.

The embankment collapsed at around 18:30 last night in the area known as ‘Happy Valley’.

As a result the main road in and out of port St Mary is closed this morning from Victoria road to the bay view hotel.

The scene was covered with members of the emergency Services throughout the night.

Department of Transport and the Civil Defence workers were also deployed to the scene.

12 properties in the area were evacuated. 36 people inlcuding young children had the option to spent the night in a refuge area at Port St. Mary Town Hall although many spent the night with friends or family.

Michelle Heywood lives opposite the scene. She told 3fm how she and her young children had to flee their home in just what they were wearing and all of their belongings are in a house left ontop of a mudslide. (audio above)

The extent of the slippage is being evaluated but there are fears that the earth that has been washed away was holding Bay View Road up.

As the road is expected to stay closed for some time people are being diverted via the cronk road, the Lhargan and Plantation Road.

The buses, including the school run will be terminating at port st mary school. Parents are being asked to drive their kids their for pick up as the road to avoid pedestrian traffic.

Police will be on the scene throughout the morning.
