A drink driver who effectively handed himself in after falling off his motorbike has been fined over £1,000.

54-year-old Robert Blackwood pleaded guilty to one charge of driving with excess alcohol at Douglas Courthouse earlier this week.

Police were called to South Quay just after 10pm on October 7 to reports a man had crashed however they could only find his bike which had been parked near to Lord Street station.

At 1:40am the next morning Mr Blackwood went to the police station to alert officers to what had happened - he failed a roadside breath test and was arrested.

Blackwood's advocate said the Douglas man had been drinking for five hours before "foolishly" deciding to ride home - but he hit an oil slick and fell off, making the rest of the journey on foot.

The court was told he went to tell police what had happened as he was concerned the emergency services may be looking for him and it was part of his “conscientious nature”.

Sentencing him, Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said it was difficult to know the level of alcohol in his blood at the actual time of the crash - she fined him £900, plus £200 in costs and disqualified him from driving for 12-months.
