Douglas starts new garden waste collection service

A new garden waste collection scheme has started in Douglas.

Douglas Council has set up the service to encourage residents to recycle items rather than just throw them away.

It's expected to run alongside the normal black and green bin collections from February to October.

Items that can be included in the garden waste bin are grass and hedge cuttings, leaves, tree prunings, twigs and small branches, plants, weeds and bedding from herbivore pets such as guinea pigs and rabbits.

Fruit and vegetables and invasive non-native species of plants, like Japanese Knotweed, should not be placed in the recycling bin.

So far the council has had 3,000 applicants for garden waste bins and has delivered just over 1,500 of them.

The council has confirmed it has no plans to start a food waste collection service at this time.
