Court throws out Shoprite's planning case

Shoprite's attempt to sue the government over plans for a bowling alley and warehouse in Braddan has been thrown out by a deemster.

The supermarket's parent company, Isle of Man Enterprises, went to court after EFB Ltd was given extra time to develop a warehouse and leisure facility on Ballafletcher Road in Braddan.

EFB, which owns Oddbins, wanted to build a restaurant, motel and 12-lane bowling alley in Tromode as well as a warehouse for its business.

In 2013 it was given permission with two years to carry out the plans but an application for extra time in 2015 was turned down.

This was then overturned by Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Richard Ronan on the advice of an independent inspector.

In court Shoprite claimed EFB had been given special treatment by politicians and asked Deemster Doyle to send the plans back to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

The supermarket cried foul over links between EFB and former Chief Minister Allan Bell and produced a raft of government emails to back up its case.

However Deemster Doyle said there was no apparent bias and the planning appeal had gone through due process.

He dismissed the petition of doleance.
