Community service and fines for Ramsey man following fatal accident

A teenager has been given community service after causing the death of a man from Scotland by driving without due care or attention.

19-year-old Declan Cummins appeared at Douglas Courthouse for sentencing yesterday.

Magistrates had convicted him the offence at a summary trial last month after he pleaded not guilty.

The court heard how he didn’t use his mirrors when overtaking another car in August last year – hitting 51-year-old James McFarlane.

Mr McFarlane died as a result of the injuries sustained on Central Promenade in Douglas.

His advocate said Mr Cummins had shown 'genuine remorse' and the event and tragedy would 'live with him for life'.

Cummins was sentenced to 120 hours of community service, disqualified from driving for 12-months and fined £1,000.
