Check businesses are registered to avoid rogue traders

People have been urged to check that businesses are registered before using them, to avoid falling victim to rogue traders.

Legislation states that individuals, firms or companies who are conducting business under a name other than its own must be registered.

At the end of last year the Office of Fair Trading and the Companies Registry identified around 400 businesses advertising on the Isle of Man who were not on their books.

Since then 70 per cent of those businesses have rectified this but the public have still been reminded to check out a company before asking them to undertake work or using their services.

According to the Office of Fair Trading this will limit the scope for rogue traders who often demand payment in cash, rarely issue receipts and give false business addresses.
