Caution for company which damaged sparrow nests

A Manx company has been given a formal caution after damaging sparrow nests while carrying out development work.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture says the protected nests were disturbed and lost because appropriate checks weren’t carried out before work started.

It says this is an example of ‘reckless behaviour’ and has asked all owners, developers and contractors to refresh themselves on their legal requirements under the Wildlife Act 1990.

Protected species commonly found on development sites include birds, bats, lizards and frogs.
