'Advent of speed cameras approaching', warns commissioner

Motorists are being warned speed cameras could be brought in if they don’t change their attitude.

The remarks were made by a commissioner in Braddan after data was collected from a Smiley SID (Speed Indication Display) in the parish.

John Quaye says, whilst there is ‘resistance’ from the board, the “advent of cameras is approaching” unless speed limits were respected.

However, the chairman of the local authority claimed cameras alone would not solve the problem.

Andrew Jessopp also suggested introducing traffic calming measures in the area could be difficult due to its location.

He said: Because Union Mills is on the TT course, making changes to the roadway has always been an uphill task.

Braddan has become the latest parish to raise concerns about speeding, with a number of local authorities pressing for action to clamp down on the problem.
