The department of transport have said that they are in the process of gritting the Islands roads.
They have said that the heavy snow fall was not predicted.
Currently there are 11 vehicles with salting and 10 pickup type vehicles salting by shovel on key junctions and problem points.
Over 70 men are working on major routes – that’s not including the mountain road which has been closed since the early hours of this morning.
Lots of vehicles were abandoned on the roads as a result of the heavy snow which have caused difficulty for the gritters.
We’ve also been informed that access in and out the storage barns where the salt is kept has proved problematic.
More salt has been ordered as half of the Islands supply has been used.
The department of transport are reminding people that salt pre-treated on the roads will not on its own stop snow building up in cold conditions.
