Salt Reserves Dip Below Half FUll After Very Busy Week

It’s been revealed that the severe snowy weather conditions over the past week have seen the Island’s salt reserves reduced to 50% of its full storage capacity.

The weather forecasts are predicting much of the same throughout the rest of winter, so with this in mind measures have been taken to conserve stocks.

The Island’s maximum strategic salt storage capacity is 5,200 tonnes, which was full at the start of the winter season.

Orders had already been placed for further deliveries when the first of this season’s arctic snow periods hit in November.

Obtaining the salt is not as easy as it once was with all salt mines placing heavy restrictions on their deliveries because their stocks have been depleted, and they cannot dig it out of the ground and process it fast enough to meet demand.

The island’s next delivery has been promised in mid January, and following that the next will be in March 2011.
