Poor season for Basking Shark sightings

Poor figures of basking shark sightings recorded, cool weather and low plankton levels cited as reason

The Manx Wildlife Trust have said levels of Basking Shark sightings have seen a considerable drop this year when compared to previous summers.

The season traditionally comes to a close in September, thus far only two sightings for the month have been recorded.

The MWT have said the poor figures are likely down to the cooler weather and a lack of plankton on the surface.

Although numbers were down the trust were still able to carry out some valuable research with 3 satellite tags attached and numerous slime samples taken.

However, last week saw a rare sighting of a Thresher Shark in Manx waters by the warden at the Calf of Man, the sharks are notable for their long tails, and unlike basking sharks, sharp teeth.

If anyone records any more sightings they're asked to contact the Basking Shark Watch by clicking here.
