One of the senior figures involved in the new physiotherapy scheme, which launches today, believes it's a major step forward for the health service.
Stephanie Maddrell of Douglas Community Health Centre explained to 3FM how the new self-referral process will benefit both patients and GPs.
She outlined the daily practicalities of this, and how the new scheme will streamline the current service.
In addition, the Physiotherapy Team will aim to see patients for their first consultation within three working days where possible.
Today's first phase is for muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves, with the scheme will extend to those with longer-term conditions in July.
Those who still wish to see their GP about musculoskeletal problems may continue to do so.
