Only one local GP surgery met all standards set by CQC, following report

Out of 13 local GP surgeries on Island - only one met all standards set by the Care Quality Commission.

Improving administrative processes, carrying out annual medication reviews within recommended timeframes and better monitoring of patients with long-term conditions.

They were just some of the recommendations made by the CQC, folllowing the review into local GP surgeries.

It comes as the body was ordered by the Department of Health and Social Care to assess whether services are safe, effective, responsive, caring and well-led.

Out of the 13 surgeries inspected - 12 didn't meet all of the CQC's standards.

Despite some recommendations and room for improvement, it was noted all surgeries were 'caring', and all met at least two of the main standards, with one GP - Castletown  - meeting all five.

Government says not meeting all criteria doesn't mean surgeries are 'unsafe to provide patient care, nor should patients be concerned about attending'.

Positives highlighted included 'exceptionally responsive services', wekeend cervical cancer screening appointments, chronic illness support groups and awareness raising of care among LGBTQ+ communities.

Officials say some improvements have already been put in place and actions plans are being developed.

Health and Social Care Minister Lawrie Hooper said he 'understands people may have concerns when they read the report for their General Practice, but wants to reassure residents GP surgeries are safe places to receive care.'

Manx Care is now responsible for ensuring these improvements are implemented and says it's 'committed' to ensuring the improvements are implemented, with some already having been.
