Foreign nationals who wish to settle permanently on the Isle of Man will now have to pass a new test.
The Passport, Immigration and Nationality Office says people will now have to pass a written and an oral test.
The change comes into force at the end of next month and follows a move in the UK to ensure that all applicants can speak English to a certain standard.
