Police say more than twice as many crashes happen on roads with speed limits than in derestricted areas - but admit the data may be inaccurate.
A Freedom of Information request to the Constabulary asked for the figures as well as how many accidents involve drivers under the age of 21.
In their response, officers say in the past five years 2,695 accidents happened in areas with speed limits, while 1,177 happened on routes with no maximum speed.
However, over those five years officers saw 497 incidents where a speed limit - or lack of it - wasn't recorded.
