Minister reveals modest spending on Bunscoill

The Education Minister has shown that the cost of running the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh in St John’s is no higher than any other similar-sized primary school.

He was responding to a series of questions by Onchan MHK David Quirk, which questioned the funding of Manx-speaking education programmes in the Isle of Man.

Peter Karran said that Mooinjer Veggey operates the Bunscoill on behalf of the department at a contract cost of just £287,500.

The new Bemahague middle school in Onchan has cost £34million to build.

Minister Karran added that the fee for caretaking and cleaning combined with the budget for schoolbooks, furniture and utilities for the children was just over £26,000.

He concluded by informing Mr Quirk that there are no additional ancillary costs other than advisory support and admin services, which are provided centrally to all schools as standard.
