Local Dentist escapes ban following General Dental Council review into conduct

The review into the actions of 56-year-old Ian Hulme-Rigby flagged up a number of issues, among them administering unmeasured amounts of painkiller and allowing his pet dog in his surgery.

A practicing dentist on the Isle of Man has kept his job after being found guilty of a string of failures during his time at a dental practice in the UK.

The review into the actions of 56-year-old Ian Hulme-Rigby flagged up a number of issues, among them administering unmeasured amounts of painkiller and allowing his pet dog in his surgery.

The review pertained to incidents between October 2005 and May 2007, he moved to the Island after his practice closed in 2007.

It was revealed that his former dental nurse resigned amid fears that infection spread was a real risk to patients, she also branded Hulme-Rigby's approach reckless.

His professional conduct was deemed to be inappropriate, unprofessional and not in the best interests of the staff or patients.

Despite all this the Committee chairman reviewing the situation deemed Hulme-Rigby a competent dentist who cares about his patients, he escaped a ban because they believe the shortcomings can be remedied.

He will however be made to undergo a course in ethics, conditions have also been imposed on his current practice, the Douglas Dental Spa in Ridgeway Street.
