The Great Laxey Wheel has ground to a halt after damage to the landmark was discovered.
The decision to stop the wheel has been taken after Department of Infrastructure engineers uncovered a defect in a large connecting timber rod whilst carrying out routine maintenance.
Manx National Heritage says protecting the Islands heritage attractions and the safety of visitors is the top priority and further assessments will be taken whilst efforts are made to resolve the issue.
The heritage site remains open to the public between 9.30am and 5pm seven days a week.
