Jail for 'monster' who strangled ex-girlfriend in jealous rage

Douglas Courthouse

An angry and jealous "monster" who strangled his ex-girlfriend because he thought she was in a new relationship has been jailed.

26-year-old Carl Glover was told he should be "ashamed of himself" as he was sentenced to four years and two months in prison after pleading guilty to GBH with intent.

He attacked his ex-partner in the early hours of January 10th at her house in Anagh Coar whilst the pair were in bed.

Glover was said to have "lost his head" when she refused to show him her mobile phone, grabbing her around the neck and strangling her.

She tried to push him off but he continued, before striking her in the face causing her to fall on the floor - she suffered serious facial injuries and now suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Text messages which Glover sent after the attack were read out at Douglas Courthouse - in one he told her "what I've done to you is sick" and urged her not to go to the police.

Glover's advocate told the court he'd had no intention of killing the woman but admitted as a result of his jealousy, and inability to manage his anger, "he's gone backwards in life".

Sentencing him Deemster Mongtomerie withdrew a charge of attempted murder but said what he'd done was "disgusting" adding "certainly her view is that you've ruined her life".

He said it was clear targeted treatment was needed to address Glover's mental health problems telling him "actions speak louder than words" and urging him to accept help.
