Government donates £50,000 to flood hit Bangladesh

The government is giving £50,000 to two charities which are carrying out relief work in Bangladesh.

A hundred people have died and 400,000 people have been affected by floods which hit the country last month.

Reports say houses, crops and livelihoods have been damaged, families have lost their homes and there is an urgent need for food, clean water and medicine.

Christian Aid and Plan UK will use the money from the Island to help fund emergency supplies, health care, schooling and also longer term support, like rebuilding people's lives.

Chairman of the Overseas Aid Committee Phil Gawne is confident the funding will help the charities respond swiftly and effectively to the disaster.

Last month, the Island donated £25,000 to Nepal and earlier this year another £64,000 in total went to Syria and South Sudan.
