Forcing ferry passengers to carry ID and keeping their details on file may need new laws, according to the Island's information commissioner.
Dr Alexandra Delaney-Bhattacharya's office responded to a public consultation about whether passengers will need verified ID to travel to and from the Isle of Man by sea in future.
In its response, the ICO says a lack of laws means any scheme where passengers' details are stored would have to be planned very carefully to meet data protection requirements.
And it says special consideration would have to be given to vulnerable groups such as travellers and who use alternate identities - including abuse victims.
