Douglas Council objects to Dixon's retail plans

Douglas Council has objected to plans for a new superstore selling computers and electrical goods on the Spring Valley Industrial Estate.

Dixon’s Retail Limited has put in a planning application to open a PC World and Curry’s store – selling white goods, general electrical appliances and computers - from Unit 2 on the Douglas estate.

However the Council has opposed the plans on the grounds that the retailer wants to expand the floor space by over 600 square metres.

It says this would create an adverse impact on adjacent retail areas and would generate too much traffic which would require additional car parking that was not in the original proposal.

A retail impact statement submitted by Dixon’s predicted a forecasted turnover of more than £7 million per year and the Council said this would have a substantial impact on other local retailers.

If the planning application is refused and then appealed by the retailer the Council has said it plans to engage a retail planning consultant to present the case at the appeal inquiry.
